Introducing our Little Black Dress

The Little Black Dress called Sunday

In this blog I will write all about our 100% customizable Little Black Dress Sunday. Sunday dress is designed with the idea of a modern little black dress. A dress which is versatile and which you can wear during the day and the evening. You can wear it for example to the office, during dinner parties or on Sunday brunches.

Flattering fit

When designing Sunday dress, it was important for me to make the fitting flattering for different body types. The shape is quite straight and works very nice for straighter body types as well as curvy bodies. We have tested Sunday dress on different women (and men) including myself with beautiful results.

Because firstly every woman has difference preferences and secondly different occasions ask for different looks we offer customization. Choose for example the cowl neck, which goes great together with the short kimono sleeves. Or choose a round neck, we think that fits all body types. If you want to cover up you arms in colder times or just because that’s your thing, choose the cascading puff sleeve.

The length

A Little Black Dress wouldn’t be perfect if the length is not perfect. The great thing with Sunday dress that it looks fantastic in any length. It’s really up to you to choose your favorite length. If you choose from the standard available lengths, don’t forget to fill in your own length in the size charts. Because we will adjust the length of the dress, so that the dress length for your dress will look exactly the same on you as on our model.

However, I recommend to not limit yourself to the standard lengths on the picture! For example, get your favorite dress from your wardrobe and measure that specific length. Or measure the perfect length on yourself. See how to that on the following video.

video: Measure the length of your dress

When you found the perfect length, just write the measured length in the purchase note. This note turns up in the purchase process after you have added the product to your chart. We will contact you to confirm the length after purchasing.

The fabric

Another thing which makes this little black dress flattering is the fabric. I decided to use our exclusive Italian Cady Stretch fabric, which is a medium heavy fabric with a fluent drape. It has a bit of stretch, which makes it not only flattering, but also very comfortable.

How to style Sunday dress?

You can wear Sunday dress with or without belt. For you, who wants to emphasize the waist, the belt is perfect. Without belt, it’s great for you with a straighter shape. Another thing which also works great with Sunday dress without the belt is layering with trousers. Wear the dress over trousers with a similar drape in the fabric and with flat shoes. And voila, there you have your casual office look!

Some days you might want to add some color to your black outfit.  Adding a colorful scarf is the easiest way to achieve that. Either tie a small bandana scarf around the neck or in your hair, or drape a large scarf nonchalant around your shoulder.

The great thing of a Perfect Little Black Dress is that it works with all sorts of shoes. For a comfortable and cool, modern look combine with sneakers. For the office, flat men shoes or any other flats work great. Boots are great, especially good looking in my opinion if you choose a longer length for the dress, so there is no bare leg visible. And for more elegant occasions or if you simply want to look taller, heels are amazing. Try heels in a different color than black for a eye catching accent.

Style with boots when you have a longer length.

Care tips for Sunday dress

First of all, this Little Black Dress is designed with a loose-fitting armhole and therefor unpleasant odors will not easily get stuck in the fabric. We recommend weathering the dress first and then spray some linen water for a super fresh scent.

Small dried spots can often be taken away by gently rubbing the fabric with another clean part of the same fabric. Try it, it really works! If the stain doesn’t disappear you can use a wet cloth. But please rub gently.

If you have to wash the Italian fabric, we recommend dry cleaning. I have tested washing in the wash machine, and it is possible when there is no other choice, but I think the glisten in the fabric and the hand feel lose their exclusive surface.

I think this is all that you need to know about Sunday little black dress. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions/comments or write me a note!

PINK

Pink, either you love it, or you hate it

At Studio Heijne we love pink! Because it stands for femininity and has been used as a symbol by human rights movements such as Pussy Hats Project. It’s a modern color reflecting our zeitgeist.  For me pink represents a feminist view on equality (both for women and men) and a strong but friendly female force.

Short history of pink

Pink was seen as a shade of red for centuries ago. Light-red, as it was called then, has long been a symbol for manliness, because it was associated with the god of war called Mars.

It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that the color pink started to represent femininity. But soon the symbolic value went down, and pink started to link with childishness and girly instead. Unfortunately, it lost status and became a difficult color to relate to between the 30ties and 80ties.

The rise of pink

It started to change again in the nineties. Power comes slowly back in the symbolic value of color pink. American Riot GRRRL (underground feminist movement) dressed in pink for example. Furthermore, pink became a color representing the fight against breath cancer. And recently it became the color of the knitted hats from the earlier named Pussy Hats project while protesting against Trump becoming president.

Now pink has become a symbol for Women on the way up from an economic, cultural and political point of view.

The meaning of pink 2019.

Since pink is a combination of red and white, both colors add a little to its characteristics. It gets the lust for action from the red color, and the white color gives it an opportunity to achieve success and insight. Passion and power from the color red, softened with the purity and openness of the white color completes pink color meaning. The deeper the pink color, the more passion and energy it radiates.

Pink has been in fashion for some seasons now, from strong pink to pastel pink. As a result, we see pink more and more as common color around us. In interiors for example and of course on garments.

At Studio Heijne we are not done with pink yet for sure! We have many products in the this beautiful color, from belts to scarves and silk dresses.

Get a ZOZO suit for free

Have you heard about the ZOZO suit? It a Japanese unisex suit which helps you measuring your body size without using the traditional measurement tape. Of course we love this at Heijne. Who doesn’t want help measuring?

Testing the ZOZO suit.

I ordered the suit and tested if it worked better than measuring with a tape. The package arrived and I fitted the dotted suit. I love the design, it makes me think about artist Yayoi Kusama

After putting on the suit, I had to turn around slowly in front of my mobile, while the ZOZO app made pictures. A few seconds later the app created a 3d avatar of my body shape with all my measurements.

The measurements are pretty correct. The differ sometimes 1 cm or 2, but according to me that is quite accurate. When you use a measurement tape the result can also differ 1 or 2 cm, depending on various factors. For example, the time of the day can affect the result, but also the time of the month, especially for women. In the end a cm or 2 won’t affect the fitting a lot. I would draw the line for accuracy at 3 cm.

My personal body measurements

ZOZO had a special promotion offer, which made it possible to order a trouser and a t-shirt for free. I ordered these garments and they will be custom made accordingly the measurements from the 3d avatar. I will definitely let you know if the fitting was better than standard size garments, when I finally receive them. I hope I will get them fast, because it’s already more than 4 weeks ago I ordered them! They might have the great technique, but they are pretty slow i my opinion.

My conclusion is that the ZOZO suit works very fine. It’s perfect if you prefer to use modern technique instead of the traditional measurement tape.

The making of Alexandra Dahlströms dress for the Guldbagge gala

I can’t believe it’s only 3 weeks ago I met Alexandra Dahlström for the first time in my store! With certain persons you just click and that’s how I felt with Alexandra. I fell in love with her from our first “date”. We looked at trailers from her coming movies, for example “Dream baby dream“. We found out that we share the same passion about equal right for women and men. Additionally, we talked about the challenge of being a female entrepreneur in (still) a man’s world.

Starting the design process

Our first meeting made me extra motivated to design a dress for her, despite the very limited time (only 2 weeks). Firstly, we had a fitting with dresses from my collection to find the right shape. As we only had 2 weeks before the Guldbagge gala, we didn’t have time for an extra fitting to try new shapes, so it was quite risky!

Week 1

The next week I spent time to source for the right fabric. Alexandra had sent me some pictures with inspiration, and we soon agreed that we would go for glamour theme. Therefore the choice for a metallic fabric was quickly made.

My fabric supplier Taroni from Italy helped me out. They have fantastic silk qualities, all made in their factory in Italy. There was no time for production of new fabric and fortunately I found an amazing fabric in stock. This exclusive wavy plisse fabric is made of silk and metal. The fabric was sent with Express to Lithuania, where my atelier is located.

Week 2

The atelier was stand by, ready for action. I already sent them the sketches and all the measurements. Within a few days the gala dress was on the way to Sweden.

The original gala dress in the atelier.

The weekend before the big day

On Saturday, only 2 days before the gala, Alexandra and I had a fitting at her place. The last one, I thought. But in reality, the dress wasn’t a perfect fit. Therefore we decided to do some improvements. As a result, I spent the whole Sunday sewing. Frankly, I was pretty nervous for the delivery on Monday. The moment of truth! It was going to be right or wrong, nothing in-between.

The moment of truth

Here is the result. Let me know if you like it in the comments please!
